FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the National Employee Attitude Survey (NEAS)?

The survey is a simple, web-based instrument that employees fill out anonymously. It asks about perceptions of teamwork, supervision, communication, and understanding of business goals. It should take employees less than 15 minutes to complete.

Why should employers participate in this survey?

How your employees feel about their jobs and your organization is an important component of your business success. The NEAS gives you the opportunity to receive a custom-written report on those feelings, at no cost to you, and with minimal effort.

And since BLR will be requesting the participation of thousands of companies of all sizes and types of businesses, you’ll also be able to benchmark your employees’ attitudes against those from similar companies. Strengths and areas of challenge will be apparent, and where others have done better, you’ll know such improvement can be achieved.

Why is BLR doing this?

In its 30 years, BLR has continuously surveyed the business community about its HR practices. Thousands of companies take part each year in our annual surveys of compensation and benefits. These help HR managers do a better job of recruiting and retention.

What is HR Daily Advisor?

What will the Survey ask about?

Most questions are about teamwork, communication, quality and commitment, and personal development… all key elements of employee engagement. The questions are answered with a 0-10 point scale, with space for optional write-ins.

What do I, as an employer, need to do?

Give us some basic information on your size and type of business, along with a contact name, on the signup form. We’ll then send that person a link to email to your employees enabling them to access the survey. The next thing you see, a few weeks later, is your custom-written report. Obviously, any internal publicity you give the survey will enhance participation.

Can we customize the survey name or the survey questions (questions 1-30)?

Sorry, at this time, we are unable to customize the survey.

What if there are other departments or jobs in my organization that don’t match your list (questions 31-32)?

For questions 31 and 32, five "other" choices are provided for your convenience.  If you have department names or job categories that are not on the list provided, send a separate note to those involved, letting them know which "other" choice corresponds to their identity.

For example, if you have a "Safety Science Department", note that department personnel should mark the "Other 1" button, which at your organization will stand for "Safety Science".  If you have a job category such as "Anthropologist," then inform employees in this job group which "Other" number this job title will stand for so they know how to mark their survey.

Note that, in the results you get, the “other” categories will not benchmark to a national level, but you will be able to see how these uniquely named departments and job categories measure internally within your organization

Many of my employees don’t have Internet access. Is there a paper version of the survey?

Yes, we’ll include a PDF file of the questionnaire you can print out and copy as needed. Then either have the completed questionnaires keyed or ship us the pack of employee questionnaires.

Note: Data entry fee of $1 per survey must accompany surveys.

If you would like us to complete the data entry, please mail the surveys to:
Business and Legal Reports, Inc.

Some of my employees have Internet access, others do not. Is it possible for our company to complete the survey?

Yes, you can have your employees who have access to the Internet complete the survey via the unique link provided to you. For the employees with no Internet access, they can fill out the PDF paper version of the survey. At this point, you will then either have the completed questionnaires keyed or ship us the pack of employee questionnaires. (There is a nominal charge of $1 per questionnaire for data entry.) If you do use paper, take measures so employees can submit the forms to you anonymously.

My company has multiple work sites. We would like to compare employee attitudes across the different work sites but within our company. Is this possible?

Yes. If you have one person to run the survey for your company, contact us with the number of unique links that you will need (one per site) and we will be sure to give you a link for each site. If you have a point person administering the survey at each site, then each individual can sign up with their own email address, and they will each be mailed a unique link for their own site.

What about confidentiality?

All results are confidential. The only person emailed your company’s report is the individual you designate. And the only way results will be published is on a group basis, with no individual participants or organizations ever identified.

BLR has been doing highly sensitive compensation and benefits surveys for over 25 years. We understand the need for confidentiality and privacy and have systematic processes in place to ensure that we can deliver on our pledges. Never once in our history of doing surveys has our commitment been compromised. Your input is important. Its confidentiality is important, and we take our obligations very seriously.

What is the deadline?

There is no deadline for participating in the survey. It will remain open at all times so that your company can go ahead and sign up for the survey when you are ready to participate. Your answers will then be compared to all other companies who have already participated.

You’ve given my employees 15 days to fill out the survey form. What if we need more time?

Setting a deadline for collecting survey data will help you motivate your employees to participate in the survey immediately instead of putting it off to a later date. If needed, you can get more time for your workers to fill out the forms, with the only consequence being that your company’s results will take a little longer to be returned back to you. You may change your deadline by going to the survey control panel and following directions given there. The panel will also tell you how many of your workers have completed the survey at any point in time.

How long will it take BLR to return our survey results back to our company?

We will process your data and produce an individualized preliminary report and open-ended feedback report for you within 3 weeks of your deadline date. A final, more comprehensive report will follow shortly. You will be notified by email when these reports are available for download via your control panel

How statistically valid is the survey?

Because the survey was just launched in 2007, statistical validation will await the results. These will depend on overall response levels, and the degree of difference in response. We will not know these until the first round of survey is complete.

We anticipate high levels of validity for total results, where sample sizes will be sufficiently large; however, demographic “slices” of data may require progressively larger amounts of judgment as the sample sizes decrease. It should be recognized that while it is very difficult to meet scientific standards of validity in surveys of this type, the results can nevertheless provide very useful insights into how employees feel about you as an employer.

At the company or organizational level, statistical validity will depend significantly on the percentage of employees who complete the survey. You can help improve validity by encouraging participation.

Is the survey available in Spanish?

Yes, when you sign up for the survey, send an additional email to BLR’s customer service department to let them know that you would also like to access the Spanish version of the survey. Both the English and Spanish versions will be made available to you.

My employee was interrupted while taking the survey. What should he/ she do? How will my employee know if the survey was submitted or not?

If the employee returns to the survey on the same computer from which he/ she was taking it originally, then they will be brought back to the page where they left off. The employee will know that the survey information has been submitted once they reach the final page that thanks them for completing the survey.

I am having an issue with the link that was sent to me. What should I do?

Please contact our customer service department, let them know what your specific issue is, and we will analyze the problem from our end as quickly as possible so that you can begin your survey right away.

I have already signed up for the survey, but have decided to delay launching the survey to my employees. What should I do?

When you are ready to take the survey, go ahead and activate your link. If you have already activated your link and have decided to hold off on completing the survey within the next 30 days, then please contact customer service so that we can temporarily deactivate your link. If you simply need an extension of your completion date, you may adjust the deadline yourself via your control panel.

My company is outside of the U.S. Can we still participate?

Yes, you are welcome to participate. There is a special section on the sign-up page where you will be able to record your country of origin.

Will you do this survey every year?

That’s the plan. You (and we) will then have a basis for reporting year-over-year results.

Can I see a sample of the report that I will receive?

Yes, we do have a sample of the preliminary report available for viewing. You may access the report by clicking here.

And you say there is no cost to me?

None at all. It’s completely free to participating employers.

If I have additional questions, how do I get answers?

Just email us at neas@blr.com or call our NEAS Team hotline at 800-727-5257, Ext. 2600. You’ll quickly get a personal answer.

What references did you use to create the NEAS?

We used several references that helped in the creation of the NEAS.
